I started watching Tim drive his #25 Folgers Monte Carlo( in the 80's) like a man possessed. That's when he caught my attention. I hadn't realized that he(like quite a few other drivers) had started their careers in the short track Dirt arenas. In fact.....I'd found out about his Super Modfied racing a few yrs back when I saw his car at the WORLD of SPEED Museum in Wilsonville, Ore. I took a whole slew of pics of that car and will build it in the future.
In order to get the PC-7 for this build..an AMT PC-6 was used for the Donner. The side pods had to be cut off and and rebuilt to represent the side pods of the first down force car to run at Indy. Trying to get measurements for the correct dimensions on the side pods was next to nothing that I could find. Going by the few pics that I have I went forward. The engine cowl had to be re-worked as it also was different. In the front shot of the 1/1 car I saw that they rounded off all leading edges leading into the side pod tunnel. I"ve got that like I want it and now...I have to build the curved ramp that deflects the air flow out through the top of the side pod.
Here are a few pics of the progress to this point. A lot more work is to be done on the body and the side panel for the side pods. A head rest has to be fabbed also. Thanks for stopping in and looking folks....

I can already tell this is going to be awesome.
Gary I think you have taken on a huge project. To me, Indy cars are the toughest to do conversions on, the kits are not that great to start with and there never seem to be enough reference photos. I have tried three, completed NONE. Good luck with this project, it is an interesting subject. Keep cutt'in and Gloo'in, you'll get there!! Mine either ended up in parts boxes or bounced off the wall.
Looks real good, Gary!!! I've never attempted one of the AMT Indy cars but they are a very fiddely thing to build from all accounts that I've heard. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this one!!!
Looking good Gary, I'm anxious to see this one when finished. Keep us updated on the progress.
Bob
Thanks for stopping in and commenting folks. These AMT indy kits are way old but for the time period that's all that was out there. This kit is just a donner for this project..... as you can probably tell. I've got the ramps built that are located on the inside of each side pod. The side panels for same need to be fabbed along with top back panel. The front wing end plates need to be rebuilt also. I'll have update pics here in a few days...
Here's a small update. I've got the ramps built on both side pods. Now I can get the side panel for each side drawn and added along with the 2 top panels in the engine area. Here's a few pics ....thanks for looking in and commenting folks...

Coming along nice Gary, a lot of fab work going on there.
Bob
Thanks Bob. The end panels on the front wing need to be fabbed also. The existing panels are too small and the wrong shape for Tim's car.
Yes, Its always good to set the tires and wheels around to get a feel for the way it will look. Do you have a ref pic of the real car to share?
Gary....
Doesn't matter what you build......it will have my attention...... :)
Thanks for looking in and commenting Bob and ED....

I set the wheels and tires( wheel base..center to center) to get measurements for the side panels and the top panel. When I started this build...I honestly didn't think there would be this much fab work. But that's not the case here....of course...LOL That's ok though....this has been a pretty challenging build. I do have the first set of side panels in mock up. I use card stock to get the correct pattern and then I'll trace it to sheet plastic.
Here's a pic of the car at speed...

Here's an update also...the first set of side panels They're a little to high...need to be trimmed down and the slope needs to be re-slopped also. The front wing end plates have been rebuilt and added.....

Thanks, for the photo , Gary. Looks like your making the needed changes to the nose. This is going to be a one of a kind model, which is always nice to have.
Thanks Mark. Yea...it's a one of a kind. Not a kit of this car for sure.
Here's a small but important update. ALL the side and top body panels have been made and are in mock up. The top panel still needs the curved portion on the tire side made. This is really starting to look like an Indycar. Looks kinda funny(naked if you will) with out the rear wing. Here's a few pics... Thanks for looking and commenting folks....

Boy Gary, there's a lot of fantastic fab work going on there.
That thing is going to look great when finished, I can't wait.
Bob
Thank you Bob for the look-in and comment. When I started this build I really didn't know how much fab work it was going to take. It kinda surprised me. LOL I love fab work as it challenges me to do better on each build.
Here's an update.... Both side panels are finished. The fuel buckeye slot on the left panel was fabbed. Both radiator slots were also cut in. The radiators( from the pc6 kit) were also reconfigured and added. The front part of the body panel was pinned so it wold go back in place exactly the same place every time. The top part of the engine cowl was also Fabbed and the whole for the POP OFF valve was cut in( it's off a hair and needs to be fixed...soon..) plus the base for the pop off valve was made for the intake plenium. The head rest and rollbar panel were fabbed and need to be touched up a little.. It's coming together a little at time. Primer is on the horizon!! Thanks for stopping in and commenting folks...

Wow!!
GREAT Fab work, Gary!!
just one question though....
What's the pepper for? lol ::) ;D
Thanks Ed... the pepper can is for used Xacto and Razor blades.
Thanks, Gary....
Just knew it had to have a purpose..... :)

A lot of nice work here Gary. And yes, good reminder on the blades. If you're not going through a half dozen blades on even the most mundane build, then you're making it harder on yourself than you should!
Thanks for the compliment David. That's for sure on the Blades. I use three different type of cutting blades. Scalpel..(for Decals)..Xacto and single edge razor blade for all other cutting. I've also taken a single edge razor blade and broke it at an angle so it would fit in the Xacto handle for small hard to get at areas. Those things get dull pretty fast but for a specialty cutter...it works good.

Found that out the hard way back in the '70's,,,,still have a very faint scar on the tip of my left middle finger where an X-Acto knife tip caught that finger when working with an old blade slipped off where i was trying to trim something and caught that finger tip. Talk about seeing stars like those cartoon characters do, Whatever i was working went flying across the room. Still think i hit a nerve as that area around the cut has been numb ever since. Not to mention how long it took to stop the bleeding. No....did not go to emergency or Dr.'s office.
Started on the engine area and had to come up with a way to attach the headers from the block to the turbo. I cut off the turbo housing and pinned it so it was removable. I then pinned the connecting tube(??) ends that attach to the ends of the headers. This way the whole thing will come apart (for paint) and make it a whole lot easier to assemble once everything is painted. The POP Valve was also fabbed and is in. Here are a few Progress pics...

Wow!!
That;s quite the fab work!
Hey Ed...yes...more fab work is on it's way....
This update is on the coil over shocks on the rear suspension. I almost went with the molded on coils and shocks... but after removing the mold seams and pin marks I decided that they were going to be a pain in the paint brush to paint the springs and the shocks. Sooo..I decided to make the coil overs out of tube and rod from evergreen. The coil is .030 soft leader wire that I picked up at Cabella's. I made them so that they will come apart for easier painting....

Oh, yeah....!!
Wish i had the patience to try this.....
Here's a progress post. The engine is painted using ALL ALCLAD metal paints and in MOCKUP to see how things will fit together after paint. I'm happy with the snug fits. I still have clean-up and also touch-up painting to do but it's getting there. I wanted to shoot the white on the body today but it needs a few spots touched up on the body work. Here's a few engine shots...

Here are a few shots of the wheels that I shot with ALSA MIRROR CHROME. I like this paint and it's fairly easy to work with.
It dries fast and is pretty durable. It is a little on the spendy side but to me...it was worth it.

Looking fantastic Gary. Engine and wheels look great.
I can't wait to see this one finished.
Bob
Oh, yeah!!!
Engine and wheels/tires look great!!
Thanks for stopping in and commenting Bob and Ed. I still have to do the lettering on the tires to finish them. Of course....there are still a few small things like the ignition wires and smaller parts to add to the engine... It's starting to come together....
Wow, those metallizers really make that engine come to life. The wheels and tires look awesome as well.
Thanks Mark. Yea...I really like the Alclad metal paints. They sure are a good thing to work with..
Here's a small progress report... The Distributor and coil are installed on the engine. The second (putty) go round on the side pods are ready for primer... Once I get it all primed...it will be ready for the color on the body. Here's a few pics...

That finished engine looks GREAT.....
Just not enough words to describe how fantastic it looks.
Wheels/Tires looking GREAT toooo!!!!
Tank on the front of the engine....for oil?
(Guess I'm not paying attention to the engine as it was being built...missed it....)
Thanks Ed..That Tank is the plenum for the Turbo charger. That tall piece is the pop off valve.
Here's a body update.... The white paint is on and waiting to gas out at lease a week before I tape off for the RED. Also...there needs a little touch up here and there on the white. Actually.... I need to shoot more white on the inside of the side panels along the top edge. The side panels are attached to the top of the tub and are removable with the top for ease of touch up. Here are a few pics of the progress....
Test fit..still in primer...

Oh my!
Ready to be attached to the rest of the car....!
Hey ED...it's ready to attach for sure. I'm in the taping process on the body to shoot the Red on it. I should get that accomplished today...hopefully...
That looks great! Really looks like metal.
Hey Marty....yea...that Alclad metal paints is great for making plastic look like metal. I like working with it.
:) Gary, I don't think I have commented on this one, as I am not much into these racers. However, it is quite a piece of work, and you are to be commended for it. You are very much a builder.
Hey John....thank you for stopping in and Saying something. Even though you don't learn towards this kind of motor sports...your comments and support is appreciated.
:) Well, you have to appreciate a guy's skills and time.
Update on the Paint. The RED and White paint scheme is on. I shot the red yesterday it is still gassing out. I'll let it go for at least 4 days before rubbing it out a tad. The lines of the red don't match up... but that's not an issue as the black stripe will cover all of that. I can almost see the light....Thanks for stopping in and looking around...

Oh yeah.....!
Looking GOOD!!
Thanks ED!!! It's getting real close now. I still need to rub it out a little more and then the decals will go on. That's going to be a pretty good challenge in itself.
Looking great Gary, I can't wait to see this finished.
Bob
Thank you Bob and David. It's getting real close. A few re-do's and I'll be on track again...
Front suspension is complete. The safety harness is next. Then...it's on to the GREAT Looking decals. Here's a few pics of the chassis in mock as I can't attach the engine/rear suspension permanently until the stripes are put on. Progress is being made...a little at a time... Thanks for looking folks...

Fantastic fab work Gary.
This build is really starting to pop. This is going to be an outstanding replica when finished.
Bob
Hey Bob...thanks ...I started on the decals today. Hopefully I'll have it finished in a few days. There are a few that have three layers to do on them and I want each layer to dry a day before doing the next. It's really getting close to track time though.
WOW!!
Looking GREAT!!!
Thank you ED.....
It is FINISHED. It was a very interesting build to say the least. Finding reference pics for this build proved to be a little challenging but as we know....that's part of the build. A special Thanks for the Decal sheet as it was made for this build by Gary Sleeper from Circle Track Decals. Thanks folks for stopping in and commenting...

WOW!!!!!!
This really came out FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
GREAT job on this one!!!
Gary,
That is a fantastic replica, one you can be very proud of.
I know you put a lot of time and effort into this project and it shows in the end results.
Bob
Great job, Gary! Just amazing!
Gary
Thanks for stopping in and giving GREAT compliments folks.....it is truly appreciated.
Always great to see a build come to fruition. Especially an Awesome one like this. That engine is really something special, as is the whole model. Looking forward to your next project.
Hey David and Mark...Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Pretty Spiffy conversion there Gary, I am sure this one tried you a little as none of those kits from that era are very fun to work with. The very first pic in this build gave me a headache because I knew what you were up against, the rest just made me glad it was YOU and not me. You pulled it off and did well and I have to say, I would put that on my shelf anytime. When you get tired of looking at it, send it my way, I'll make room in my display case.
Hey George....it's good to hear from you and thanks for the compliment. I hear you on the HEADACHE thing. Those kits are pretty cool, but they do have their issues....don't they? All in all...I'm glad it is finished and one day I might part with it.....maybe...LOL
