Im doing the 1989 IROC champion Camaro. Been working on it since last September. Here is the kit.

I've been following along with this car build over on the Model Car Magazine forum. The amount, and the quality of the scratch building is nothing short of amazing.
Thanks, Volz. I appreciate the kind words. Thought I'd bring it over here too. Doesn't get much play over there.

Does seem like you've been working on that one for a while. But I'll bet we're going to like it.
Thanks, Donato. If I can just get the chassis done It shouldn't take too much longer to finish it. I have kind of messed up the body by having it hang around and constantly checking the fit of it to the chassis. I might have to resand the clear and give it another coat of clear to repolish before I decal it and put the final clear on it. I'm building it to be able to pose the model with body on or off. The body actually snaps in place to the chassis.

I'm glad that you're putting this here. Going over the pictures again, I had forgotten about the upholstered seat and all that went into it.
Thanks, Steve. It's weird, suddenly I have run into a problem transferring my pictures from my phone to my p.c. When I transfer them, it makes them into a jfif file instead of a jpeg which model car magazine won't accept. so I have to change them into a jpeg and when I do it makes the image too big for my liking.

(https://i.postimg.cc/KjPZ7vtP/1tl493.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/MfG2qwPH)
Finally got the steering linkage finished. Now I can make the headers and get the engine to fit with them on. might have to do some weird bending to get that to happen.
Starting on the headers. I will make the left side and see if it fits before making the right side which will be a lot more difficult because I'm using a flipped horizontal image that I will have to make upside down when I make it if you can follow what I just said.

Turns out the .080 headers are too fat to make it past the steering box, so I had to redo the headers in .060 rod. Actually, this was a good thing because the .060 bends a lot easier than the .080. I'm going to figure out the tops of the headers later to make sure my top to bottom fit will work to attach the exhaust pipes to the headers.

Just about done with the headers.
Headers look great. Very realistic. Nice job.
Wow Mark, those headers look great. I don't know that I would have the courage, nor the skills to make a set of headers.
Thanks, Donato and Steve. I really appreciate the comments.
Had to come up with some flat headers to make them fit. Doesn't matter because nothing else on the build is correct either. Going to be some very interesting and funny looking collectors to get them to the exhaust pipes. Still mulling over in my head how to go about that. I may not take any pictures of the bottom of the build when its finished. No, that wouldn't be any fun.

Quote from: Rattlecan Dan on June 27, 2024, 10:21:54 PMNever liked pictures of the bottom of cars anyway. Lol
Yes, I think most people just skip looking at them. It's the bodies and decals we care about.
Did some more work to the headers and collectors. Had to make the collectors separate from the headers so they can be attached after the headers are installed to the engine. The way I did it, even though it looks ridiculous, will allow me to get an exhaust system on the build even though it is completely wrong and probably has never been used on a real car ever. Thats okay. It gets the exhaust out of the little plastic engine in the build. I had to remove the stock manifold and throttle body so I can add a single plane manifold and Holley carb. I will also have to change up the pulleys at the front of the engine and the fan belts and add an oil pump. Might have to make an air cleaner and I will increase the size of the valve covers on the kit engine.

Even if not extremely visible upon completion those added touches are gratifying to you as the builder. (I hope).
You're amazing Mark. You don't have the correct intake, no big deal, just make one! I would have been digging around for one that's close enough.
Thanks, Donato and Steve. I'm hoping it will look somewhat like the manifold I posted there. I also need to make a Holley carb. I checked my stash, but nothing was there.
Finally got back to this build after 6 days without power. It's hard to do something fun when you still have a bad situation hanging over you. Did more work to the manifold and I found an image of a carb that I will try to duplicate somewhat. It's going to be hard in 1/25 scale.

Thanks, Speed but I'm not worried about time, and half the fun is making my own parts. Building a model is not a race. It's a journey. This journey may never end.
Got some more work done on the manifold and started on the valve covers that I realized I had to finish before I could finish the manifold.

Thanks for stopping by Steve, with the very positive comment. It is much appreciated.
Added the separation line between combustion feed chambers, I will need to work on the valve covers some more. The left side is too wide, and the right side is too tall.

Thanks, Donato. You're probably right. By the time the engine is installed in the build no one will notice the difference in the valve covers. I didn't till I took the photos of them.

Oh boy, another tutorial in scratch building. I love it.
Thanks, Donato. This carb might be a little big for 1/25 scale compared to kit holleys I have put on other builds, but I had to make it this size to fit the manifold I built which is probably too big for 1/25 scale but I'm not going to tell anybody. I don't think I could have made it any smaller anyway.
Some more work on the carb. Lots of sanding and trimming will have to take place on it to give it the right look.

Mark, I agree with Rattlecan Dan, Your in the elite class of modellers. Most would have just went with "close enough", I know that I would.
Thanks, Donato and Steve for the very nice comments, but elite might be taking it a little too far. Maybe just too cheap to buy 3d printer parts. I don't think I have ever seen a 3d printed carb. That would be very interesting to see. The kit Holleys are just plastic blobs that kind of look like a Holley.
I just need to put some kind of linkage on the sides of the carb. Don't really need to hook up to it. I believe that is all I have left that I can do to finish the carb. Except paint of course. That will help alot.

(https://i.postimg.cc/zDKgjfM9/1tl566.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xqj8j99R)
Mark, That carb is amazing. Way better than box parts. To me, Johan made the best "out of the box" Holley's. I had a bunch of them in the parts box when I stopped building years ago. Gave some stuff away, sadly I trashed the rest.
Thanks, Steve. I made a linkage but ran out of time to take photos of it. It's so small that it's hard to make it look right but I couldn't just leave the sides of the carb just flat with no sign of something there. I had to add sheet styrene to the top of the valve covers because the putty was not hiding a seam that developed from the sizing of the covers. I will try to get photos showing what I'm talking about.
Carb is 98% finished. just some tiny sanding work to do. I need to Elmers glue the carb to the manifold to see if I will be able to get the hood shut. If I can't, I will not be able to install the carb but have it loose and posed on the engine when I take hood open finished shots. Sometimes I have to do that with air cleaners that won't let the hood shut.

Good news. The hood shuts with carb installed but I don't think it will with air cleaner installed. I need to finish the air cleaner first and then try to lower the engine in the frame some more. If not, I will just make the air cleaner removable and only put it on when I'm taking under hood shots of the engine. It can ride in the right floorboard when the hood is shut.
Nice the way you introduced the linkage. It's a great-looking carb. Nice work.
Thanks, Donato. I appreciate your input.
Started on the air cleaner. It should be close in appearance to the real one. Lots of little rods to cut and glue in place. Found an air cleaner in my stash that I can modify.

Mark, why do you torture yourself this way? I already know the answer - authenticity. That is some very tedious work, but I know the finished product will be perfection. Your scratchbuilding skills are beyond reproach. Makes me feel guilty anytime I buy a resin or 3D item, but then a Ford Coyote is a bit much to scratchbuild.

Rick some of this stuff is torture but I figure after this build I'm going to try to just do oob builds with just changing certain things that are wrong like tires and wheels. and if I can buy the decals I will instead of making my own.
Got all the little, tiny rods in place. Now just need to get them all the same length and put a base on the air cleaner and a nut for the top of it. Will have to do some detail sanding to get them under the top of the air cleaner. some ended up sticking out a little bit.

Thanks, Steve. I want to go ahead and finish the engine so I can feel like I actually finished something. I can't install the headers till the engine is in place, so they won't be on it till I actually install the engine which is a way off right now.
I wanted to show the fan belt pulley and belt assembly before I got started on it but forgot and started cutting it apart so it would work on this car. I placed the pieces back together sort of to show how it looked. I have to relocate the alternator and add an oil pump that I will have to scratch build. I will also have to make it a dual fan belt set up between the two main pulley assemblies. I made a distributor and put it in place, and I think it will work.

No one is ever going to accuse you of being afraid to work. You put great amounts of effort into these builds. And it always shows. Nice job.
Thanks, Donato. I promised myself the next build will be oob. Probably even paint it with my new airbrush. If I can find a low enough humidity day that is. Might have to bristle brush it after all. We don't get low humidity days till late October around here.
Most of the pulley/belt stuff is done. Just some tweaking here and there. Then I just need to finally fix the left valve cover and add the two breathers to it. Then I can prime and paint all of the parts and get the engine completed. It will be great to actually complete one sub assembly. The engine.

Thanks, Steve. Actually, I had to sand back the pulley at the bottom middle of the engine for the oil pump and add a new nut at the front. It was a little too close to the antisway bar. I have fixed the left valve cover that had become too narrow at the front somehow. Just need to make two breathers for that valve cover and I can finish the engine less headers. They will have to be installed after the engine is installed. Very tight fit at the firewall for them.
Man, you sure do mess with some tight tolerances. Looking great all the way!
Thanks Donato. I really did not want it to be that tight, but I guess I made the pulley system a little too forward. Should have done better mockup work before I got to into it. But it will fit, so that's the main thing. I did some more adjustments to the pulleys and the left valve cover. Hoping to get the breathers for the valve cover done soon. There won't be any fan. The real car had an electric fan mounted on the radiator.

Got started on the left valve cover breathers. got them finished but dropped one on the floor and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to find it. Never did so I will have to make another one. But I was happy how they turned out. I did find a part I had lost a few days ago so that was interesting.

Lol. The endless battle with the carpet monster. I shouldn't laugh I'm sure myself and others have done the same.

Trouble is the floor is the fake hardwood stuff. You would think I would be able to find it on that surface.
Finally got two almost done. Just some more detail sanding. They are so tiny it is very hard to make them identical but the distance they are apart on the valve cover it shouldn't be that noticeable.

See that!? Even the tiniest inaccuracy and solution to the problem does not go un-noticed by this guy. Great attention to detail as we like to say.
Thanks Donato. I finally got a pair I can live with, and I can finally start priming and painting the engine and assembling it.

Thanks, Steve. Yes, I'm kinda wishing I had glued the hood shut. I would have been done by now and working on my next build.
Got the engine parts primed. Just need to paint and assemble, and maybe even install the engine in the chassis.

Loving the progress on this build!! With all the work you've put into it, I'm halfway expecting a video of of it cranking up when it's done. ;D
Thanks Razorback, but doing videos is way beyond my skill set and probably expensive too. And nobody wants to hear my voice. I probably sound like grandpa on the "Real McCoy's", if you can remember that far back.
HA, I remember!
I'll bet even Walter Brennan could make some believable 'vroom, vroom' sounds. Really enjoy watching this build come together.
Gauldangit! Twern't nothin wrong with that voice!
Thanks, you guys. I used to watch that show every chance I got, and glad you guys can remember it, which means you might sound a little like old Walter too.
Haven't heard of that one. I was born in '87. ;D
Too bad Razor. It was a pretty good show. I needed to have a chrome air cleaner to be correct, so I tried using one of those chrome pens to paint it with. It looked terrible so I tried Bare Metal Foil which did not turn out that great but better than anything I could have painted it with except Revell Chrome which is almost impossible to get. I think you have to order if from Europe and you can imagine what the shipping costs would be on something like that. I also finished the headers. Trouble is I lost my Holley carb and I'm hoping it fell in my big box of styrene plastic. If something small falls in there it takes a while to find it. I surely don't want to have to make another one.

Good news. I found the carb. I really did not want to make another one. Also, I got a tip from a guy at MCM forum telling me that Revell Chrom is available at Model Roundup for a little under 34 bucks. I went there and did a search for it, but nothing came up so I'm thinking they are already out of stock for it. We shall see tomorrow.
Great news. Got a call back from Model Roundup and they actually do have the Revell Chrom rattle can, so I ordered two of those babies. Been wanting this stuff for over a year now and so happy I will finally be getting some so I can improve the look of the Air cleaner and also the wheels that I previously did in another type of chrome spray with an airbrush that came out Okay, but this Revell stuff will improve then immensely. It looks like I misspelled the product name above but actually that is how it looks on the can. they leave off the e.
Did the first painting of the engine. I will have to cut off the valve cover breathers and re paint them with the Revell Chrom when I get it and then reinstall them. I also need to do some touch up work here and there with a tiny brush where paint got overlapped especially in the pulley belt area. I then need to paint the whole engine with some dull coat varnish. Even though this is Vallejo acrylic paint it is too glossy. I need to do some detail painting of the carb linkage in gold and then also put some dull coat varnish on it. It might take 4 to 5 days to get the Revell Chrom so I will do some rebuilding of the chassis in the engine bay where stuff got knocked off from handling it so much and it also needs to be painted.

Thanks, Steve. It Seems things are starting to come together a little bit better.
I realized I had already assembled the wheels and tires, and I needed to get the wheels free so I could repaint them with the Revell Chrom spray. I put them in the freezer for a while and they luckily came apart so I can do so. I will be removing the bare metal foil from the air cleaner and painting it at the same time I do the wheels. I might even do the expansion tank and of course I will be doing the valve cover breathers as well. Latest tracking shows it to be delivered this Saturday at 9 p.m.
Just wanted to see how the painted engine looked in the bay. Still haven't done the touchup on it.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3JsgS0Sr/1tl616.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3dZ4WNQz)
Finally got the engine painted but will have to go back and fix the valve covers one more time. I used matte varnish on the engine after touching up around the pulleys and I also used a gold leaf pen to paint the carb linkage. I got my Revell Chrom spray today so I'm pretty pumped about that.

I got my Revell Chrom on Saturday and decided to try it outside yesterday. I wanted to see how it would do on an over 90% humidity day. Wasn't good. First spoon I had to put too much material down to make it gloss so the material kind of puddled up and also looked like it had trash in it which it didn't. the second spoon I got too far away, and it blushed badly. I'm supposed to get a front on Thursday which will bring the humidity down in the 60% range. I hope I get better results then. And I hope the front actually comes through. We don't usually get cold fronts down here in southeast Texas in early September.
I cleaned up the wheels from when I painted them with alcadII chrome and will shoot them, with some other parts I want to chrome on Saturday, when the humidity is supposed to get down in the 50% range. I will shoot them with some black lacquer spray can paint from testors which says it has primer, paint and sealer all wrapped up in one product. I'm hoping to shoot them as glossy as I can get them so when I shoot them again on Sunday, which will still be low humidity, with the Revell Chrom. I'm hoping to finally get the results I'm looking for. I have found that it is the process of shooting which will either make the finish look chrome or not. So, it is up to the user to get it right. In other words, using the Revell Chrom is not a slam dunk as far as your results will be.

Will paint the parts on the plate today black and then hit them with the chrome tomorrow. the humidity will be lower but it supposed to be windy so I will have to find a place in the back yard shielded from the wind somewhat.
Got the parts painted yesterday and pretty happy with the results. Turned out the paint was a metallic black, but it still went on smooth which is what you need when shooting the Revell Chrom over it. I will shoot the chrome later on when the humidity gets down in the low 60 per cent range. you have to take full advantage of a front when it comes through and dries things out. I'm going to let these parts cure for a few days. I hear that it takes a long time for this stuff to cure.
Here are the painted parts ready for chrome and I finally finished the front part of the chassis where it fits into the nose of the body.

Doing great Buddy. Stay on it. I empathize with your humidity problem. I've been waiting a long time for this Florida humidity to come down a bunch.
Success! The Chrom worked beautifully. I will get pictures posted of the results when I can. Thanks, guys, for stopping by for support. I was really worried about this process.
Will leave these in the clam shell dryer for a couple of more days to make sure they are nice and hard. Haven't decided yet if I will hit them with some future for protection. I will have to handle those wheels pretty vigorously to get the tires on them.

WOW....I'm impressed that it reflects, mirror like, your hand and phone....it just doesn't get much better than that.

Good idea Steve, it would be nice if you could save on not having shipping costs, but this stuff is well worth the money. You should have at least one can in your arsenal.

Totally agree with you Brian. I watched a YouTube of a guy testing this stuff out and his results were off the charts excellent, but I doubted if I would have the process like he had to get good results. Luckily, I was very happy with the results. The stuff even looks better in real life than in these photos. And I really needed chrome wheels on this build. That was one of the main features of the 1989 IROC Camaro race cars was their dazzling chrome wheels. Silver or non-reflective chrome just wouldn't have got it done.
Made and installed roll cage padding.

Thanks, Steve. Took me a while to figure out how to do those little, tiny ribs. the rest of it shouldn't be as hard. Found out I have to repaint the body. The Vallejo clear varnish I put on it a long time ago never really cured. It always felt sticky to the touch. I don't know if my bottle was too old or what, but I had to strip off the varnish and, in the process, I ended up taking all the paint off the roof. I should have just stuck with the testors acrylic clear like I have always done in the past. I never really liked how the roof turned out so I'm kinda glad I stripped it down to nothing.
Making the most of "learning from our mistakes". Glad you will make it all work for you. Great job on that rear axle.

Mark, You are one amazing modeller.
Thanks, Steve. I appreciate the kind words. Actually, turning out better than I thought it would. I just can't seem to find a good picture of the belt driven pump. It's hidden in all the ref pictures I have. Just have to guess, I guess.
Finally found a ref picture of the pump but it is so small that after I blew it up to see it better you cannot make out a lot about the way it actually looks but I think I can get in the ballpark with it. So far, all I need to do is add a fan belt and a bolt to the pump pulley and I'm going to call the axle finished.

Ahh, your usual determined quest for perfection. Admirable.
Thanks, Donato. I don't know about perfection but its close enough to get by. I got some gloves from the local grocery store, and they are perfect for handling parts you don't want to get fingerprints or body oils on. Much more dexterity than cotton gloves. I had to remove the stock gas tank because the axle wouldn't fit, and it would have been ridiculous to leave it there anyway. Trying to locate the axle in the right place so I can make some truck arms for it.

Started on the truck arms. I will need to add the fuel tank so I can locate and install the mounting point for the track bar. They actually had them on both sides of the car, and they are located very close to the front corners of the fuel tank. I will have to add a bar to the floor to hook the shocks to. My ref pictures show both 2 or 4 shock setups for the rear axle. I'm choosing the two-shock setup because I'm doing a car that ran at Michigan.

Keep those updates coming on this awesome machine. Excellent work by a master craftsman.
Thanks, Rick. I installed the truck arms to the axle and started making the fuel tank. I did not realize that I did not need to make a top for the tank till after I made it. You cannot see it. Another senior mistake on my part.

As always with these projects what you think was the correct dimensions were not. I had to reduce the size of the tank from front to rear and also make it less deep. I just need to add the reinforcement straps and install a wall that will be even with the front of it in the compartment where the axle is mounted. I also realized from new ref photos I found that the truck arms are not straight but have a bend right before where they attach to the axle with u bolts.
the two photos show the bend right after where the spring is mounted on the arm I will need to redo that.

Yes, Brian. Finding good ref photos for this build has been a real challenge. It's not a modelling subject that is well covered.
Moving on. the areas around the tank are now finished and I had to fix some voids in the floor between the frame rails and the floor. My next step will be adding the track bar brackets on each side of the opening. You only use one, but they put two on the real car. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the car being prepared for an oval or a road course.

Here is an enhanced photo I captured with my cell phone watching a you tube video of an IROC race this car was in to get a ref picture of the lower rear of the car. You can see the track bar mounts, but I had to enhance the holes with an editing tool so you can better see what they look like. The red car was also from a you tube video. Sometimes that's the only place you can find ref photos. You're basically taking a picture of the image on your computer monitor. Thats why it is of such poor quality.

Coming along fine. You sure do like to work at it. Going to be a great build, I'm sure.
Thanks, Donato. I keep finding more stuff to do on it and it keeps me from getting it finished. It's been over a year now since I started on it.

Impressive! This model is going to be great when it's finished. Your detailing is so well done.
Thanks, Steve. Things should start coming to an end whenever I finally get this axle and its parts completely finished. Then it will be a lot of painting and assembling parts to the chassis to finally finish the build.
Made some truck arms and springs. I have the axle located in the right spot. Just need to add the springs and make and add shocks and cut the truck arms to the right length and then make and add a track bar. Also need to make and add the mounting points at the front of the truck arms.

You´re the master of scratchworking, Mark :)
The rear end looks great so far !!
Thanks, Michael. Its slow going right now because I'm fighting plumbing problems on the house.
Got the springs mounted on the truck arms. They will be more compressed when the axel is installed in place, but the pedestal will still be partly showing. I guess the pedestal is actually the jack screw for adjusting the springs for too lose or too tight conditions. I will drill some holes in the floor for the jack screws to go in. locating these holes correctly might be a challenge. They have to be correct fore and aft and also left to right. If not the spring will sit crooked.
(https://i.postimg.cc/gjbXXFBb/1tl764.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/S2VN35hg)
Made an elongated box to mount the spring jack bolts to. Not exactly like the real car but the same idea. Really tight fit for the springs but I think it will work.

Beautiful work. I have to admire your talent and dedication to accuracy and realism.
Thanks, guys, for the really kind words. I really appreciate them.
Got the bushings put on the truck arms. Working on drilling the holes so I can put the rods through the bushings to locate the axel to the frame so I can remove the tire saddles.
(https://i.postimg.cc/FzqKqH5f/1tl770.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/wRXHRHBH)
Started working on the shocks. I was able to get the truck arms attached to the frame, so I made 6 shocks. 4 for the rear axle and 2 for the front suspension. I was able to find a good ref picture for the Monroe shocks that were used on the real car. I used a rate pair to get the size right on them.

Added the two rear shocks. Just need to add a track bar and the rear suspension will be done. Then I can start priming all the pieces I made including the chassis itself and then paint the parts individually and start assembling the chassis and get it completely finished. I will be able to pose the model for photos with the body on or off. I still have to paint the body again from messing it up with all the handling I had to do with it in mockup work. That's okay because I wasn't really that happy with the completed paint on the body before.

Got the track bar installed without glue so far, as well as the axel assembly itself just to make sure it will install properly. I will glue it in as an assembly after I get it painted and hopefully plumbed. Also want to install some chains on each truck arm that they used to limit travel of the axle.

When I get semi close to the end of a build, I make check lists, so I don't forget anything. First one is for things that still need to be made. Second one is for priming and painting everything and the third is to assemble everything hopefully in the right order. Plus, with every check of the list you get some reassurance that your almost there. I started this build in September of 2023 and really looking forward to finally finishing it. Please pardon the poor penmanship.

Had to make a cooling fan powered by the engine. I had made an electric fan to use but the ref picture I used was from Dodge Avenger that was used in IROC in 1994. The Camaro in 1989 still used the engine 4 blade fan like was used in the cup series that year. I recently found a ref picture showing that. The rest of the cars are basically the same except for the body and engine. It was the same banjo chassis for both makes.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BbYsZqP9/1tl791.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/1VqbJ1KJ)
Had to paint some jewelry twine for hoses on the engine and to plumb from the fuel filter in the trunk to the engine and some jewelry bead cord for spark plug wires. I used Revell chrome to paint the twine and roughed up the bead cord with some 3200 polishing pad and then primed and painted it with a mix of Vallejo acrylic paint. I need light blue wires. Also finished and installed the fan to the engine.

Thanks, Donato. I made the spark plug wire too thick and had to redo them at .5 mm. I made a battery box and need to make a differential cooler but have no good ref photos. At least I will have one and nobody knows what it actually looks like but Ray Evernham. The seats is in the way of seeing the battery box so I will just have to guess.

Some genius at Revell thought it would be cool to mold the wipers into the windshield. Anybody got an idea how I can remove them without ruining the windshield? Also, I added the windshield support straps. I left the bottoms loose so I can remove the dash till final chassis assembly. the straps flex out of the way.

For the wipers, I would tape right above them to protect the rest of the glass, and file them off. I imagine those cars had a black border around the edge of the windshield.

Thanks JH. I will give that a try and check to see if there was a black border under where the wipers sit on this kind of Camaro.
As it turns out these cars did have a black border all the way around the windshield and the wipers actually sat on the black border at the bottom. This made it easy to remove the wipers because I had to add the black border. I also finished the windshield supports that were oddly put mostly in the drivers view. I guess they were also meant as protection for the driver. I fixed the small radiator brackets that I keep breaking off while working on the chassis. They are very tiny and break off easily. I will probably break them off again before final assembly of the chassis.

Nice job on the wiper removal. Happy Turkey Day!
Thanks Donato. I'm glad JH gave me that tip about the windshield might have a black border because it sure made things easier to fix. Now I need to check to see if the huge back glass had a black border as well. I owned one of these 3rd gen Camaros back in 1984, but I can't remember, so I will google it.
Started working on the window net. used some 1/16-inch crepe tape you can get at Hobby Lobby. slowly but surely kept cutting it down to the size I wanted. I made it removable. Also, it will be able to be posed laying down on the door as if the driver was fixing to get in the car.

Thank you very much, Donato. This is the first time I used the crepe tape, and it was very user friendly. Just wish they made one just a little narrower but I kind of think that would be impossible. 1/16 inch is about as narrow as they can get, I guess. I used to try to cut masking tape with a #11 exacto blade into strips but the results were unusable.
Working on the front shocks. Only thing left is the drive shaft and I can start priming all the parts so I can paint them and get this build assembled. Still need to repaint the body but that should not be a big deal. I handled it so much making parts for the chassis that I really messed it up badly. Thats okay, I was never that happy with the way it turned out the first time.

.
Thanks, Steve. I thought by now I would have had all the parts primered and painted but I forgot about the brake calipers till I found out how to install the front tires to the suspension and saw the glaring omission. Hopefully nothing else will raise its glaring head.
Started on the second of 4 of theses calipers. Just need to try to make 4 that look basically the same.
(https://i.postimg.cc/02t1jqNz/1tl843.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cr8bk2wW)
Had to start completely over on the calipers and not try to make them too much like what was on the real car. Just need something on the brake disc that can pass as a caliper.

did 1 of the 4 calipers. needs major clean up and one more thing added to the side of it.

Finally finished the calipers. they are so small it's hard to make all 4 look exactly the same, but the front are so hard to see when installed it doesn't really matter. I will put the best two on the rear wheels. I have some good weather today so I'm hoping to prime the chassis and all the little pieces that need to be installed on it. Then I will paint each piece and install them. Only thing after that is repainting the body.

Painted everything that goes on the chassis and some parts on the chassis. I just need to install all of them and do a major touch up job once everything is in place. The only thing left to do is paint the body and add the windshield and back glass. the body won't be installed permanently on the chassis. I made it so I could remove it to display them side by side if I wanted to. I made it so they can snap together.

Got the engine completed. Not too happy with the air cleaner. the Revell chrome spray does not like to be touched at all. You don't really have to touch it much to cause it to dull out. the next time I use it I will coat it with future to see if that will protect it. Not too happy with my air cleaner element either. After painting it and weathering it with some soot it looks terrible. The engine looks much better without the air cleaner. Still need to do some touch ups to the belts and pulleys and fan.

Like I said, maybe some future will protect it from dulling out from handling it. I guess I should have used plastic gloves but it's not really easy to work with them on if you've ever tried that.
Quote from: MarkJ on January 09, 2025, 08:16:45 AMI guess I should have used plastic gloves but it's not really easy to work with them on if you've ever tried that.
Mark, I use the nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight. They are not too restrictive or cumbersome and are reasonably priced. They also work pretty well when messing with paint strippers. One caveat, they will get glued to pieces if you get careless with the glue. This piece of art you are building is really looking good.
The work is looking pretty nice. Perhaps a gold Moroso type cleaner if you like to have some contrast. Maybe an orange or black element? The chassis, cage and all your add on parts are looking good as well.
Thanks Rick and Donato. I'm thinking if I can get a warm day next week I might sneak outside and repaint the air cleaner with Revell chrome and really try hard this time not to touch it with bare fingers. The future did not affect it at all so as soon as I can, I will future it before I can mess it up in the future. The gold would be nice but I'm really trying hard to duplicate the real car in my paint choices.
All that fab work really paid off!! Everything looks amazing!!
Thank you, Razorback. I really appreciate your take on the build.
got some parts installed and painted.

I was going to start repainting the body, but I got to looking at it and realized I had removed the door handles which the real car had an had done the park lights wrong. So, I started to fix those before I can repaint the body.

Mark, i know i am late with this response but what did you decide to do with the chrom painted pieces?
I do empathize with you on the painting/handling process with it, i put together a 1974 Roadrunner and used it on the wheels and bumpers. They started out with the reflective mirror shine to them and by the time i had them mounted on the car/in the tires, the finish was horrible. Pretty bad results for something that is as expensive as it is...

Thanks for your question, Dave. It's good to know I wasn't the only one who has had this problem with Revell chrome. I went ahead and put future on the wheels which did not hurt the chrome appearance on them, and I will try to redo the air cleaner with Revell chrome and then future it before I start handling it again. Revell should put on the can you might want to clear whatever you're doing with this product before you handle the parts you paint with it.
More work done on the body.

I had to make the park lights a little less wide. They needed to be 5/16 of an inch to be the proper scale size. Also finished the left door handle. Now I just need to add a raised border around the park lamp openings before I can begin the final sanding before priming the whole body again so I can repaint the body.

Got the body sanded and ready for the Mr. Surfacer 1000. Suppose to get back in the 60's on Friday. Will also rechrome the air cleaner at that time. Never thought I'd see my little truck covered in this much snow

Dave, I'm looking forward to seeing the wip on your Camaro. I have a 68 Sunoco Camaro I want to do someday.
Hopefully I can shoot the chrome engine parts black today so I can re-shoot them Revell chrome tomorrow. Then I will be finished with the engine except for plumbing it.
Don't forget to put oil it the engine Mark! 😂
Just messing with you buddy, your attention to detail and model building skills are amazing.

Thanks, Steve for stopping by. I think that's one thing I won't be putting on my list of to dos. I'm trying to check them off as fast as I can and get this baby done.
Added some more stuff to the chassis and got the air cleaner and valve cover breathers ready for black undercoat. This time I'm using a special black undercoat spray that Testors makes for what they call shifting colors. The chrome doesn't shift but this should be a very good paint for the Revell chrome. Once the Revell chrome has totally cured I will future it and still handle it with plastic gloves so no way I can dull it this time. I also fixed the hood so it shuts tight in the front I will reveal how I did it at a later date. I really hate when a hood doesn't shut flush at the front. Especially on a race car.

Really coming together Mark, looks great.
Thanks, Steve. I'm going to wait to the very end to install the wheels and tires. If I don't, I know I will end up breaking all 4 of them off handling the build doing other things.
Mark, this build is taking a life of its own. You are doing some masterful work.
Thank you, Rick. I am glad it is finally coming together. Just hope I can figure out how to use acrylic latex paint in an airbrush. It's all a matter of getting the paint thinned down enough to flow but not flow too much. I guess it will be trial an error on an old spare body.
All I lack in finishing the chassis is installing the tire/wheel assembly's and the windshield supports and a general touchup of the whole chassis. Then I can finally paint the body, install the glass and decals and I will be finished with this build after a year and a half of trying.
I'm looking forward to seeing the completed race car!
Thanks, Steve. You and me both my friend. It's been a long time coming but it's supposed to warm up and stop raining next week, so I should be able to get the body painted. I bought a gram scale to measure the paint to get just the right 50/50 mix of paint and thinner in the airbrush cup.
Got the tires on, just a little touch up work and the chassis will be done. Then on to the body for paint, install glass, decals and future.

Thanks, Donato. I've been having a hard time keeping the left front tire on the chassis. I finally decided to epoxy it on. I'm almost afraid to see if it finally worked and its nice and tight. Looks like good weather this week so I'm hoping to paint the body and get this thing wrapped up.
The chassis is finally done except for painting the lower radiator hose. I did not realize I had missed it till I took these latest pictures. I will put it in its display box till I get the body completely finished to keep the dust off of it.

Thank you. Steve. I really appreciate the kind words. The chassis is officially done. Time to get on that body and try to paint it right this time. Thanks again.
Be careful now, after all that hard work. Be careful! Lol. I know it's going to be great!
Excellent work Mark! I am really looking forward to seeing it finished up. You have some really good scratch building skills.
Thanks Donato and Scott for stopping by and commenting on the build. Gives me incentive to continue on. Just hoping I can get a day with less humidity. the wind has to come out of the north to get that, but it doesn't last long around here in southeast Texas. Sometimes the humidity is right, but the temperature is too low and its very windy which can cause trash to get in the paint when painting outside or a tiny bug landing in the wet paint. Luckily this Vallejo paint dries pretty fast.
Got all my stuff ready and painted the model yesterday. I found that the Vallejo airbrush thinner was too strong and made the paint run when applied to the model. I had to mix up a new batch of paint with the gram scale like I did the first batch. Luckily the gram scale makes mixing the paint quick and easy. the only problem with the gram scale is you have to calibrate it first and you need something that weighs 500 grams to calibrate it. They don't tell you what that is in the instructions, but it turns out a 16.9-ounce bottled water is 500 grams and i have plenty of those to use. I used vallejo medium thinner on the second batch of paint and it worked great without running or any other problems. To make the right amount of paint for the gravity cup you need to make 6 grams of mixed paint. since the cup weighs 2 grams I had to make 8 grams which fit perfectly in the gravity cup. the neo air compressor is a neat little compressor and the neo for Iwata air brush works perfectly and not hard to clean at all with 91 % alchohol so I can clean it in the house where I build the models. that's all you need to clean acrylic latex paint if used in your airbrush.

Loving that color Mark! I can't wait to see it all finished up👍
Thanks, Scott. I was able to get some Tamiya x-22 clear today so that should make it glossier when I can get that on.
I think I'm going to try using aluminum foil to mask the body. Trying to cut down on the amount of tape touching the finish. May not work at all but worth a try. I need to mask the area around headlamp covers, the louvers in the hood, and the rear spoiler blade. Those items need to be shot black.
Like the "powder blue". Color almost looks likes "gramps" old '59 Chevy Bel Air, minus the cat eye tail lights! Awaiting the finish!
Thanks, Mopar. I'm hoping when I get the clear on it, it will look more like a petty blue than a powder blue. Below is the target color for the car I'm trying to build. The quality of the picture is not that good because I had to take a picture of a photo with my cellphone, and you get those weird lines in the photo when you do that
(https://i.postimg.cc/8zhCZL0Z/1tl67.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/FYHmRkmS)
Looks nice. That Petty Blue color is hard to capture on film. Pending on the trim and pics you take you'll probably nail it! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Donato. It will be close enough to get me in the ballpark. If the car had been olive drab that is the color, I would have used. The main thing is I wanted to do Terry Labonte's 1989 IROC championship car, so that's the color it will be. Strange enough this is the first Texas Terry build I will have ever done.
I decided to use aluminum foil to mask the body to cut down on having to use as much tape to do the black items on the car. Worked out very well and was easy to do. I just smoothed the areas around the items to be painted with a toothpick and then cut out the foil leaving just a little to be masked. I still have to make some small masks at the corners of each headlight cover which were rounded not squared off. Now I wait for another good weather day to shoot the black. After that I will clear the body with Tamiya x-22 clear. Hopefully that will get me closer to the finish I want.

Ham n cheese? ;)
More like bologna. ;D
I found a cheaper way, I take Walmart or Publix bags, wrap them over the car or put the car in then cut the area to be painted big and taped the bag around the area to be painted. I have tons of bags, not so much foil. Whatever works for you, frugal way for me.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qqm0YHfR/shopping-bag-masking.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Bags look good too. I just like the way the aluminum foil cuts with a hobby knife.
Cleaned the airbrush and shot the black parts. Next up will be the clear. The nice thing about acrylic paint is you can clean the airbrush with 91 % alcohol right where you build the model. Not outside if you clean with lacquer thinners or enamel solvents.

Getting pretty doggone sporty Mark! Well done
Thanks guys. Yes, the aluminum foil saved a lot of time and kept so much tape off the body which can actually mess up the finish sometimes. Cost is really not a factor. I buy the off-brand aluminum foil.
The black parts are touched up so when I can, I will shoot the clear on the model.

I bought some paint strainers for my airbrush gravity cup, but they were way too big. I cut out the strainer part and made some little ones that will work for the airbrush. Most of the problem I had in the past using an airbrush was getting trash in the paint that would clog it up halfway through a painting session. Acrylic paints are really bad about getting trashy with age. Hopefully these little strainers will help. I put that lttle fold in them that makes them conical, so they fit inside the gravity cup. i tested one with distilled water and it would not flow through. I then tried it with alcohol, and it did go through. I guess it has to be a solvent substance to go through the strainer. Weird.

I looked again at the YouTube video of a guy airbrushing a model with acrylic paint and acrylic clear and he does not strain the clear mixture when putting it in the gravity cup. I guess clear doesn't break down like paint does in the bottle. So, I won't worry about straining the clear. Weird but he is painting a 3rd gen Camaro close to the color I am using. freaked me out the first time I watched it.
Below is the link to that video if you're interested in viewing it. Nobody talks. It just has music playing and you can mute that. very informative and the guy gets really good results.

I shot the Tamiya x-22a clear today. It is glossy but still needs to be polished. Have any of you guys used it and how long before it cures so it can be polished?

Jesus driving a 1000hp sprint car with Moses in a side car, that's a long link
Looking good, Mark. Wish i could answer you on dry time on that clear, but i use the cans...and not polish.
Dave, yes that is a ridiculously long link, but it does work. The guy in the video gets a lot better results than I do. I guess I need to find that Mr. leveler 400 thinner instead of using the x-20a thinner that I used that is made for that clear or maybe I just blank at using the airbrush. I knocked a spot in the roof down to primer with the tip of the airbrush when it got away from me so now I need to touch that up and I think I will sand the whole model with 6000 today and reclear it with a 1.5/1 thinner to clear ratio. maybe it will flow better.
I've been following this build from the beginning and look forward to the finish. When I strain paint I use a pair of pantyhose. You don't want to cut it in chunks because they will unravel. I simply drape a non-used area over the top of my paint jar/cup, make a dimple with my finger, and pour the paint into it slowly. Haven't had any issues, yet. A cheap pair costs a couple of dollars and will last a long time. Just a bit of information, use it as you will.

Sounds good Rick. I might end up trying it someday.
