Title: 1957 Southern 500 winner, Speedy Thompson
Post by: MarkJ on June 23, 2024, 11:05:17 AM
Early Bud Moore car driven by Speedy Thompson after a tragic first lap crash that took the life of Chocolate Meyers father driving a Petty Oldsmobile. Later on in the race another fatality happened in the pits when a car crashed on pit road. Very tragic Southern 500.

Sad chapter in the history of a dangerous sport. Excellent build of the Bud Moore car. Speedy Thompson. Great name for a racecar driver.

My father attended that race with his brother and another friend. I remember when he got home late that night his mood was somewhat grim. As far as I can remember he never attended another NASCAR race, except for a couple of times at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Yet another masterpiece from the workbench of the master NASCAR builder. Really like the bungee cord hold downs. What do you have around the door/window frames to hold the door shut? Looks almost like duct tape.

Thanks, Dan and Rick. Rick the real car had duct tape but to tell you the truth I don't remember what I used to represent it. I might have made a decal for it. Real duct tape would have been too thick for 1/25 scale.

Tarheel, I have in the past used Tamiya tape painted silver or black for door tape. It's thin and looks pretty good. Check out the post I did for my brother Tom's old 34 coupe.

I guess whatever it took and was available to the teams. But not so sure I would trust a few wraps of duct tape to keep a door from flying open during a violent crash/rollover.

Thanks, Randy. The old ones are still my favorite. Plus, they are a lot easier to build because they are more like the real cars off the show room floor.
