Title: Next Gen Tire Decals
Post by: Papadoc on March 04, 2025, 06:58:46 PM
I seem to have issues with the tire decals falling off on the Next Gen kits. Any tips for these?

I've done tire decals on other cars for over 20 years with little issues. Is it the material maybe?

I haven't messed with any of the next gen kits, but it could be something they are using to release in the molds. On tires that I decals, I take a Qtip and wipe over them with lacquer thinner.

Are you coating them with dullcoat after applying them and letting them dry? Or are they not sticking at all? On the NextGen cars i have messed with, i assembled the wheel inside the tire then applied the decals; then i cover the wheel with a nickel and apply the dullcoat.

I usually clear(gloss clear)the tires first.Give them time to dry,and then I put the tire decals on,then give the decals time to dry and then use dull coat or matte coat over the decals. The tires in the Salvinos Jr kits are made of a different material than the AMT,Revell, etc earlier stock car tires. i'm sure someone else has a different method, but this works for me.

Yes, I always use dullcoat lacquer on my tire decals or eventually they will peel off.

A good healthy application of setting solution when applying the decals wouldn't hurt.

Testors makes it, comes in a spray can. When spraying it on in light coats, I haven't had any compatibility issues.

hobby lobby sells it in a square bottle for using it with a brush. Its kind of thick so if you airbrush it you might have to use extra thinner. It's much easier to just use a bristle brush straight out of the bottle.
