Title: Kasey Kahne 2004 Dodge #9
Post by: 18degrees on March 08, 2025, 09:05:39 PM
started this one a little while back while i was still slowly plodding along with my Donohue #66 IndyCar, which is almost done.  just a few things to glue in place.

anyway, this started as a Ryan Newman Revellogram kit, originally got some Winscals decals for it that i didn't really care for, thought they were die-cut but they are full-sheet printed.  found a few JWTBM decal sets (#9 Hat Scheme from 2004 and a 2005 Charger) on ebay that i am going to use.  paint is Tamiya Italian Red over red oxide primer to "redden" the tone a bit so it's closer to "Viper Red".

and i ended up using some wheels from Jaye, the real car has the "bullet" hubs on it as some pictures showed.  i didn't use the front suspension metal pins or the metal bar for the rears, used some styrene rod in place of those pieces and ended up gluing some styrene tube sections on the back of the wheels to mount them.  so... stance check below.

also going to use a dash from Jaye that has separate ignition components, really nice piece.  the cage and dash are all assembled, just not in place on the chassis yet.

i found sooooo many versions of this car on the interwebs... stripes on the front fenders (driver's side one already in place), stripes on the door sections, stripes on the rear fenders, no stripes on the rear fenders, no stripes at all... so i am going with the stripes on the front fenders and door sections, but no stripes on the rear fenders.  if i mess up any of the stripes, i suppose i will take them all off and go with the plain red version.  who knows at this point...

got a bunch of decals laid down last night and today.

and here is the target look - the black numbers were run at Phoenix that year.

and here is what's completed so far

the black numbers were on an extra sheet with the "Hat" scheme decals.  the white numbers look great but the black look bad@ss.  decals are a mixture of JWTBM (2 different sheets) and Winscals.  the black numbers are being REALLY stubborn when releasing from the paper... so far both of them have torn. thankfully not bad enough that they couldn't be salvaged.

the more i look at the pic of the real car, the more i realize that the side stripes and Dodge logo are out of proportion, too small.  guess that's what i get for using a sheet specified for a Charger versus an Intrepid. :o

Nice, always like K Cs Dodge cars. I used the Newman kit to do Bill Elliots 2002 R/T with Slixx decals. OOOPPPPSSSS my goof, used Sterling Marlin car.

I have a Ward Burton build in the cabinet... nothing that i would normally choose to do... but i got a couple of Intrepid kits (both generations) in a lot that i bought off Randy's way back when, and the Burton Slixx decals (think it's the "Cat Dealers" sheet) in a cheap lot off ebay a while back too. Figured why not... all the stuff is there to do it. Burton is gonna come from an Elliott kit, also have a Newman kit that i am using for a Schrader #49 Schwans build that is in partial completed status...

Sounds like you have some interesting builds coming some day. Those Revelogram kits are getting somewhat hard to find for less than an ounce of gold. I am still going to grab one for the resin nose I have to convert it to a Charger. Maybe a Kyle Petty one.

Tell me about it... this one came off ebay :-\

As if i don't have a ton on unbuilt kits to do, but i keep finding projects that i want to do like this #9.

Great work Dave! I really like this build. Gonna have to get one of those Mopar kits to build.

Thanks... far from perfect IMO. I am always my worst critic... i always find paint runs or a crooked decal after the fact. I asked my wife if i should go with the black or white numbers, she liked the black so i went with it. I was showing her some of the issues that i saw and she said "only you would notice that".  ;D

Not like it's a contest car, i get it, just a shelfer... but i always notice little stuff as i am working.

Your wife sounds just like mine. I'm very happy that she supports my hobby endeavors and is my biggest fan. She actually just today found me a place to buy denatured alcohol. You would not believe how hard that stuff is to find. The only place around here that had it is a Sherwin Williams store.

Sounds like a winner. Mine has yet to complain when yet another box with a model kit or 3 shows up on the door. Even though she knows how many i already have on the shelves in the basement.

Man, I wish I had a basement. Then again maybe I don't. I'm so slow there is no worry about where I'm going to put these things.

It's a great thing. I made a janky spray booth from 1x3s and cardboard, not ventilated, mostly to catch the overspray. I can paint year round.

to finish this build, i literally have to apply 5 decals.  and attach front shocks, air cleaner, interior vent hoses, radiator, the window assembly and the adjustment tubes that go along with it.

but i decided to show the last little bit...

here is my sophisticated chassis assembly jig ;D

and the mostly decaled body

please ignore my feet in the last pic  ::)

i had to go with the 2005 Charger trunk lid decal, the appropriate 2004 Winscals one broke apart pretty bad when i tried to use it. glad i didn't use those decals, every one that i have tried to use has broken apart.  can't imagine that the side decals (Ram's head and stripes) would have fared any better.  the only (barely) usable one is the "DODGE" above the grilles.

some better interior shots of Jaye's dash

i also did a test fit of the body with the cage in place, just to make sure nothing rubbed... evidently after i glued the cage to the chassis something flexed a bit, the right front is slightly off the ground now >:(

too late to fix that now...

Dave, the dash looks really good with the extra detail.
