Here's the start of the #25 Sprintcar. The Body is from OVAL TRACK LEGENDS ( Gary Doucette). I've removed a lot of the molded on detail as I want to make this car from a different year. There still needs to be a little more work done on it...but it's getting close. The windshield pattern is in mockup for a look at the right height and shape. I just finished grooving the rear wheels and these are the masters for future builds. The Fronts are going to be the master also. I'm still on the fence about closing the cockpit off with the leather snap-on cover ooorrr..leave it open and detail it. It will have an OFFY engine(or a representation of one...it's basically a curbside). Here are a few pics of the mockup of progress to this point...thanks for looking in folks....

great start , love where your going with this build , what is the wheelbase if I may ask ?
Thanks Jim...man...I haven't measured it. It's a kit from Gary Doucette. I'll lay a ruler on it now... it's an 86 in. wheel base. It kinda looks like a midget in the side shots don't it...I just noticed that...
There it is.....! :) :)
will be watching which way you will go with this.....covered cockpit or ready to race.....
kinda' like the idea of the covered cockpit, as that's something not seen....
not tryin' go influence you in any way..... :D :D :D

LOL...yea...you are.... ;D. I've been on the fence with that ever since I thought of covering the cockpit. On one hand...it will be different(like you said..something not usually seen...and that was my first thought also). On the other hand...that car will look really cool with a detailed cockpit area. My wife suggested that I do it both ways. Hmmmm.have to think on that one for a while...
yeah it looks a litte short in the profile shot , but 86" is right on the money for a 60's sprinter , I like the thought of doing the cockpit with full detail and and have a cover over the cockpit and laoded up on a trailer . if you go with detailed cockpit the in/out box from the AMT Grant King sprinter kit would be spot on for this car and the fuel pump would have been on the front of the engine bolted to the crank shaft , good luck building your sprinter , Ill be watching closely ...lol
Yea...that profile shot was on an angle...not dead on.
I did look at the in/out box in the Grant king and it isn't what I was looking for. Thanks for the in put though..The one in the Watson is what's going in there. I might put the offy block in there to support the headers and the intake tubes. This is a curbside build but some support is needed. I decided to leave the cover off of the cockpit also...it's difficult for me to build an open wheel car without detailing the cockpit.
You know what this means, Gary....
You have to build 2 sprints.....one with the detailed cockpit and one with the cover over the cockpit....!! ;) ;) :D :D ;D ;D ::) ::)
Hey ED...my wife said the same thing....LOL
I've got a little more accomplished on the interior. The I/O box has been cut off of the block and a mount was made to go onto the firewall. The firewall had to be ground down to be somewhat smooth and square( some what). The seat bottom was also work on to get it into the right shape. Material was added to the bottom of it to raise it. Here are a few pics for a look...
The pan with seat bottom showing..

Fab work coming along quite nicely.
Thanks ED...I'm in the process of building the front and rear suspension. I'm thinking of adding shocks on both ends. This kit needs a lot of fixing for me to get to the point of doing actual fab work. But...that's ok...it wasn't designed for what I'm doing to it.
Therein lies the challenge, right, Gary?
I know it will come out looking great! :D
Great start!!!!!

LOL...yep..that's it ED. Thanks for the compliment my friend..
Thanks for the kind words D.K.
Here's an update. quite a bit of the inside of the body had to be removed in order to get somewhat of a level area to place a backing plate( head) for the intake tubes. All is in mockup....

iookin' good!!
Changing the hood "lines" at the cowl? :)
Yes Ed...I'm changing that line. I've got a little putty on the fix spots. I sand that down today and apply a second coat this evening. Here's a few in progess work shots... just ignore the guy in the drivers seat...LOL

I've never seen one being built......I'll be watching, looks like fun!
Thanks Patrick...keep checking in...
Here's a progress update. The mounting brackets for the front axle and the shock/nerfbar bar has been fabbed. I still have to do a smidgen of body putty and that will be ready for primer. It's starting to look like the idea I am shooting for. Here's a few pics of the front end...

It sure is coming along nicely. I don't know enough details of sprints or midgets to do one.
Maybe someday....
Rett
Lookin great!!!!!! :D
Oh yeah.....coming along quite nicely......
Thanks folks for the compliments. Got more done on the rear suspension area. I need to let some of the joints dry overnight so I can sand on them. I still need to build(or I should say FORM..) the single rollbar. That should be in the next few days...I'll post update pics when I get all of that done...
Here's a small update...the nerf bars are in mock up and the roll bar body mounts are setting up for tomorrow...Her's a few pics to look at the progress..

lookin' GREAT.....even with just a small update....!
metal rods for front/rear nerf bars?
That is coming along very nicely!!!!!!are the nerfs made of wire and soldered?they look super!
Thanks ED and Pat. Yes...the bars are brass rod and they are soldered. They do come in the kit from OVAL TRACK LEGENDS. The body and the front/rear nerf bars are the only thing that I'm using out of the Troy Ruttman Sprintcar kit.
Here's a progress update....the Roll bar and support has been Fabbed and is in mock up. When the joint dries on the support bar...I'll make the rear shock mounts for both sides. The torsion bar tubes still need to be fabbed and added to the body. Those(both sides) and the side nerf bars will be done then. Here's a few pics to look at. To me it's starting to give off that cool feeling when looking at these bad boys in the pits...ya know?? LOL Thanks for looking in...

Gary,
That sprint car is really coming along nicely. With that kit, you had an awful lot of work to do to make a nice build.
I'm really enjoying watching the progress on this one, I can't wait to see the finished project.
Bob
I'm watching my friend, here, turning a sodden lump into a great looking racecar! Simply amazing!
Thank you Bob. Ya...I had it in the back of me brain that this would kinda be a fairly quick and simple build as it is a curbside. But....Not today. LOL It has been a good challenge to get things straight before anything can be built. In ALL fairness...this kit wasn't made to do what I'm doing to it. But...if one builds it straight from the box (as it was made for...)I don't think there would be to many issues.

Looking good, Gary.......... :)
Thank you for the GREAT compliments folks. I've got the front and rear suspension fabbed along with the dash and steering unit. This puppy is almost ready for final sanding and then off to primer and paint...Here's a few pics of the suspension...thanks for stopping in and looking....

you have this looking great ! don't forget to fab up a big "D" for the front bumper all those cars from that era had the owner/builders first letter of their last name made into the bumper
Thanks Jim...ya...I thought of doing that also. But....I was also thinking about putting screen on that front nerf.
looking great........!!!
Thanks ED. I changed the windscreen on this bad boy. I decided not to have any glass. It's got that high rock guard that was used for awhile back then. I'll post a pick of it when the putty is sanded and a little presentable...LOL

Gary, I like your use of brass on this and I can imagine that it makes things easier in some ways for those smooth bends. Do you anneal your brass fist or just use it as it comes? What little I have tempted with brass did not turn out so well as it was too hard and I thought that maybe annealing it would have helped.
Hey David...the brass front and rear nerf bars came in the kit. But...I had to reorder just the nerf bars as they had the tails cut off for the original kit. When I did solder rod like this is...I just cleaned it real good(Acetone works good ) and heated the joint and then laid a small piece of solder on the joint. Hope that helps you David.
Here's a little update...the new hood flare is finished along with the shoulder harness attachment whole in the top of the seat. The headers and pipe are in the final setting also....

Ooooohhhhhhhh yyyyyeeeeaaahhhhh!!
Looking fantastic!!
Thanks ED...
Here's the first color of paint on shots. I some how missed a few little imperfections at the primer stage that really showed themselves in the Met. Silver stage... Soooo...had to do a little sanding and added more putty for the final fix( I hope). Waiting for the body to dry(washed it) and then I'll reprime the touch up area and then shoot more Met. Silver on it. Then I'll tape off and shoot the Poppy Red. All of the other putty areas did good Here's a few pics of the work that was done.

ALL of the detail painting is finished along with ALL the re-chroming of the Nerf bars and suspension parts. Thanks for looking in folks...
That's coming along real nice Gary, I can't wait to see the finished build.
Bob

Silver will do it every time Gary! I have had a few that were "perfect" and when the silver base coat was applied, it was glaringly not so perfect! (ha!) This is going to really be a sharp little race car!
I hear you on that David. Silver will show everything..right down to a NATS A**. LOL It sure makes one work a little more..don't it...
The sprint car is coming together rather well. The brass nerf bars/bumpers look great!
Thanks Miked...I had to add more putty to the front of the hood. I'll sand it today and shoot the primer. Then...If things look smooth...I'll get more silver on it and then the second color.
nice progress Gary!
Thanks Pat. Got the Silver on and going to do the red real soon. Right now I'm doing the tires.
looking good so far, are those front tires from a kit?

The tires do come from a kit...I think? I have two large ZIP-LOCK bags full of all kinds of tires. Some I picked up at model shows that were bagged already. I found these in the big bag. They are solid rubber and these two front tires are the only pair I have. Have to get to another show and try and find more... I know that's not much help...but that's all the info I have on those....
Here's a paint update...got the second color on this past few days. I decided to go with a darker red( Chrysler Clariet Red) instead of the Poppy Red. It still needs to be rub out and the separation stripes put on but....it's starting to get to the finish. I'm still working with the new molds for the tires. I'm trying a new RTV and there's a little learning curve. Getting there though. Here's a few pics of the paint...Thanks for looking in and commenting....

WOW!! That color combo really POPS!!
Love that red!!!
That paint really pop's. That will look great with the divider stripe, I can't wait to see the finished build.
Bob
lookin good, anxious to see the grand finale!
Thanks for looking in Folks. The Red is still gassing out. I can handle it.... but it's still fairly strong smelling. I want to rub it out...add the separation stripe and #s here in the next few days. Then get the interior finished.
I like those colors together ! me thinking orange separation stripe and numbers .... LOL thats just me . who used to run at Kville with those colors ? it was a local guy that raced weekly but I an't think of his name i know he had Jocko on the hood oh well your doing a great job

Man Jim...you just blew me away here bud!!! LOL That's exactly the color (orange) that I'm using on that line. The #'s will be Chrome( to go with the 25th Anniversary Spl. Race team) with an orange outline( I'll have to print them out and see how it looks before applying)..that's for the rear. On the nose I'm going with Red with orange outline. Annnnd I don't remember who it was that ran at Knxvlle with those colors...to far back for my memory bank....
Gonna be a killer one, Gary !! 8)
Thank you Jim...The Decals are on ( second time around for the rear #s). I'll let them set and snuggle in over night as I use Walthers Solvaset. After applying it...It really wrinkles the decal up annnnd that's not a good time to play with the decal. It sure works good though. Makes the decal look like it's painted on. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this puppy up by tomorrow and post finished pics. But...here's a few pics of the finished tires and wheels.

WOW!!
Well worth the wait!! One very neat looking sprint!! Great job!!!!!!!!
Thank you ALL for the great complements. It really has been a very interesting build...that's for sure.
Great question David...it's called Handy Tak. It's made for putting posters and pictures on the wall and not putting holes in the sheetrock. It's re-usable as I've used this same stuff for over 9yrs. You can find it at Bed Bath & Beyond. You can also go to Lowes or Home Depot and and Wal Mart and get the same thing(basically) in blue. It's made by LOCTITE and it's called FUN-TAK...or Blu Tak...also Sticky Tak. They're all re-usable putty stuff. It has really worked good for me. Maybe a little cleaning after you pull the parts apart but...I like it better than the white glue stuff called Detail Tack.
Hope this gives you some choices and helps you out David

On my way out the door to go to BB&B to pick up some! I've never been happy with any of my assemble/disassemble techniques in the past. I never could get a pet octopus trained to hold the parts and most everything else seemed to stick better than my finished glue! :o I am super jacked up about this alternative so thanks for the info Gary! :D
Cool David, you're very welcome. I hear you on the 40 arms thing. It can get a little frustrating try'in to hold three pieces together in mock up annnnd then...take a measurement.
Spectacular! Another award winner!
Thanks Slim Louie...appreciated
love the way this sprinter sets looking like it could go 2000 mph setin"still !! wish I could get a set of those front tires ad wheel's so I or someone could castt them in resin , those are the best front tires/wheel's I'v ever seen on a 1/25 scale sprint car or super mod from that time period .... great build Gary just love it !!!!
Thank you for the GREAT compliment Jim.
